St Margaret’s Bay, Kent, UK: The brief was to create a Malaysian tropical garden. This was such an exciting garden to design. Both the client and I wanted to create a garden that reminded them of where they were born, Malaysia. Water was a key component, especially as the client keeps tropical fish. Planting is lush and verdant. Many of the client’s own pots and light fixings, which were brought over from Malaysia, were incorporated into the design, which was very geometric with strong walls clad in stone and a pergola for additional height. In order to show off the pots, intricate nooks were created in the walls, and a beautifully intricate urn was turned into an additional water feature. The entire garden, just over a third of an acre, had a slight slope to it, leading away from the house, so a sunken entertaining area was incorporated into the design, reached by ‘floating’ stepping stones across the ‘fish’ water feature. Looking out across St Margaret’s Bay, surrounded by verdant planting allowed the client to enjoy the garden while reminiscing about Malaysia.
