Caroline Holdaway

Her low-key presence belies a loyal client base and a formidable design talent. Caroline Holdaway’s interiors are subtle and supremely comfortable, and when working on period properties she takes care to respectfully restore what is original, adding harmonious additions to complement. ‘I give my clients a home that feels like theirs,’ she says.

Caroline trained at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and became an actress. While working at Bristol Old Vic she met the theatre designer and director Bob Crowley, who provided her first opportunity to work as an interior designer. She launched in 1998 and enjoys the intimate relationship with a client – ‘unravelling how they wish to live’.

Current commissions include the refurbishment and decoration of a Georgian house in Chigwell in Essex, a barn development in the New Forest, and the conversion of a pair of flats into one home in London. She has also recently finished a ballroom conversion in London and the transformation of a Jacobean boys’ school in the Cotswolds into a private house.

Industry recommendation

‘Caroline has a bold sense of colour. She’s great fun and this is reflected in her lively, often quirky schemes,’ says Helen Bridge of Sinclair Till.
