Caroline Paterson

An assured designer, with a talent for creating myriad styles, Caroline Paterson executes a slick, modern look and period English interiors with equal confidence. She’s genius at advising on art, and likes to deliver ‘a house with a sense of the unexpected, but respecting my clients’ personalities’. She keeps a firm eye on the schedule during work, too.

Starting her career at the Christie’s furniture department, Caroline expanded her knowledge by working in a fine-art gallery. She jumped ship to interiors, becoming assistant to Chester Jones, then set up her own design practice in 1987. She works with a team of six from her Lots Road, SW10 studios.

Working mainly for private clients, Caroline is designing a newbuild overlooking Hampstead Heath, a duplex apartment in Mayfair and assorted houses in London. She is finishing a wing to a Wiltshire farmhouse and starting a project on Scotland’s east coast. At the Turf Club in St James’s, she has completed the entrance hall and morning rooms.

Most unusual design request?

‘To design a black lacquer drinks cabinet that could also be used to house 30 pairs of shoes.’
