Caroline Riddell

Equipped with impeccable taste and a sensitive understanding of historical properties, Caroline Riddell has a track record of tackling everything from a fourteenth-century castle in Italy to flats in Kensington. She’s spot-on at designing dynamic, well-oiled family houses and refreshingly brave with colour and scale.

Caroline started her interior- design career in 1999, having already trained as a milliner and worked on product development with Colefax and Fowler. She launched her own company in 2002. Today she has a team of four at her west-London design studios. When working on period properties, she likes to ‘focus on the historical framework of the house’.

Current projects include the redecoration of a family house in Bayswater and a Victorian home in Fulham, the restoration of a fourteenth-century farmhouse in Suffolk, and a mews house in west London. She has also recently finished a dower house in West Sussex and a Spanish finca.

Most inspiring place?

‘I grew up in a Queen Anne house, which had been previously owned by the artist Edward Bawden. Many of his hand-painted wallpapers, murals and trompe l’œil remained and that inspiration has stayed with me.’
