Charles Rutherfoord

After three decades in the business, Charles Rutherfoord continues to design with a quiet yet arresting style. For clients wanting the full package, he is the bee’s knees: a trained architect who also creates beautiful interiors and serene gardens. ‘I am interested in tranquillity and light, drama in dynamic spaces and oases in static spaces,’ he says.

After studying architecture at the University of Cambridge and interiors at Kingston, Charles launched his Clapham-based architectural-design company in 1984. He has worked on newbuilds and restructuring, so has unrivalled planning experience, yet is equally skilled with listed buildings, frequently liaising with English Heritage. He has also exhibited furniture in London, New York, Tokyo and Milan.

Charles is remodelling a nineteenth-century house in Knightsbridge and working on a garden redesign in south London. He has recently completed the decoration and furnishing of a nineteenth-century ‘pattern-book house’ in Battersea and two extensions to an 1840s Gothick villa in Regent’s Park.
