Highly experienced and with a faithful client base, Colin Orchard has honed a style that is classic English with a modern twist, and he’s never afraid to mix furniture periods. ‘I want my clients to be totally happy, but excited, too,’ he says. He designs for a relaxed lifestyle, assuming dogs will sit on the furniture, no matter how grand it is.
After training in Scotland at A F Drysdale, Colin joined Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler, eventually leading a design team there. He set up his own business in 1989 and has resolutely kept his design team small, so he can deliver a very personal service.
With ‘a considerable amount of work’ in the US, Colin constantly criss-crosses the Atlantic. Currently on the books are two apartments in Chicago and a house on the shore of Lake Michigan. He is also working on a New York apartment, the fishing lodge on a 58,000-acre estate in New Zealand, and additional suites for Ballyfin, a country-house hotel in Ireland.
Most unusual design request?
‘To fly out on Concorde to decorate my client’s table for Thanksgiving, then again at Christmas.’
