Henrietta Spencer-Churchill

Unfazed by the grandest of country homes, Henrietta Spencer-Churchill has a scholarly knowledge of English decorating. She says, ‘I like to retain the style, interior architecture and character of each house, bringing services into the twenty-first century.’ She’s also a lecturer and author: her latest book is The Life of the House (Rizzoli, £35).

Henrietta studied interior design at the Inchbald School of Design, and in 1981 launched Woodstock Designs. Today, her main shop and office are in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, with a subsidiary studio in Fulham. Henrietta is a director of HRW Antiques and has designed several ranges of own-brand fabrics.

Current work includes designing a large extension to a castle in Oxfordshire, seven presidential suites for a hotel in Saudi Arabia and houses in Mayfair, Holland Park and Cirencester.

Most unusual design request?

‘Sourcing artwork for a hotel in Mecca, which [not being Muslim] I cannot even visit.’
