McWhirter Morris

James McWhirter and Sarah Morris’s combined knowledge fuses traditional English country-house design with an expert understanding of antiques. Cheerfully admitting to an ‘anti-fashion’ philosophy, they turn out fresh, pretty rooms that are sympathetic to a property’s historical roots. ‘We listen to our client and the house, and then create a comfortable, classical yet quirky interior to suit both,’ they say.

Sarah worked for 17 years at Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler, and ran her own design team there. James’s background is in antiques, and he has his own shop, McWhirter. The pair established their practice in 2005 and have a ‘small and friendly team of like-minded people’ at their SW10 base.

Ongoing projects include a flat in Mayfair, a country house in Gloucestershire and the refurbishment of rooms at a house in Chelsea. Recently completed work includes the restoration of an eighteenth-century gatehouse, new tea rooms and the estate office at Highclere Castle in Berkshire, a modern villa in Portugal, a flat in Chelsea and a pair of cottages in Kensington.
