Michael Nicholas

An accomplished and meticulous designer, Michael Nicholas instills his clients with confidence, pairing an authoritative understanding of architecture with a talent for sharp design. ‘We like to provide an elegant fusion of classical elements within a contemporary canvas,’ he says. There is a masculine palette at work here, featuring splashes of bold colour. He has a great eye for abstracts, too.

Michael worked as a chartered surveyor, latterly as a board director of Nelson Bakewell. In 2004, he retrained in architectural interior design at the Inchbald School of Design, winning the school’s Director’s Prize in 2005. After a stint with Stephen Ryan Design, he launched his own practice in 2006. There’s a design team of three at his SW4 offices.

Commissions include: the interior design for a newbuild penthouse in Chelsea, a rectory in Kent and a 600-square-metre newbuild house in St Tropez; and the extension, refurbishment and design of a Victorian house in Kensington.

Most inspiring place?

‘I’ve seen the Pantheon in Rome three times and it always makes me draw breath. The scale, simplicity and use of concrete remains so relevant today.’
